Unicorn Kids was inspired by our journey with our first born, Elena.  She was 19 months old when we discovered she had a life threatening allergy to nuts.  I was holding her in her diaper and eating a pistachio.  Her chubby baby fingers grabbed at it and quickly put a thin piece of the shell lining in her mouth.  The combination of that and me touching her skin with the nut residue on my hands sent her into anaphylaxis.  At the time I had no idea what was happening...but 45 minutes later I was rushing her to the ER listening to her gasping for breath as her condition worsened each second.  Since then our lives have changed and our journey into the world of understanding and navigating life with food allergies began.  Nine years have passed and we still are learning along the way.  Elena is now old enough to take an active role in her safety and has a desire to help others.  As we educate her on how to care for herself as she grows older, our hearts take rest in one thing alone...Elena’s overwhelming love and passion for Jesus Christ.  Although her journey may seem scary and lonely at times, our hope does not lie in her growing out of it, treatment, etc.  Our hope lies in our Heavenly Father’s love for her and the calling He has on her life.  “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.  Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.  But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”  Hebrews 13: 14-16.
